Will, Maud and their amazing tribe provided a truly exceptional day at the wonderful Earth Lodge site on the picturesque Euston estate.

The day began with welcomes all-round, followed by a live, in-depth expert explanation from Will on Lithic Reduction, Flintknapping techniques and the process of crafting a flint axehead. Following this, we were given the opportunity to practice ourselves on some world class spalls of flint.

The afternoon offered a fascinating range of activities, from field archery, to exploring Will’s Earth Lodge, and hide tanning and butchery also. Later in the afternoon, Will took us on a walk around the site that included an expert discussion on plants and herbs suitable for cordage making, food and medicinal uses.

The evening banquet was a superb three course Feast of delicious flavours, fare and wonderful company. We can’t wait for the next one!

Will’s flint-knapping course was a fantastic way to spend a day. His enthusiasm and skills make learning a treat. You leave with tools your Neolithic ancestors might recognise and a respectful perspective. He’s an excellent teacher, combining serious science with stories and metaphors to get his points across. His style is a potent blend of philosophy and hands-on guidance, delivered with genial humour.

This was something I’d been looking forward to for months and I was not disappointed. Will’s knowledge and experience of flint knapping is epic to say the least. It is a tough craft to learn and I have many long hours of learning ahead of me. For me this is the start of a long journey and I shall aspire to be able to craft beautiful tools from flint one day, but that is a distant light in the tunnel for now. A thoroughly enjoyable day and I shall return to continue my journey with flint under Will’s expert guidance as a master flint knapper.
