It’s almost twelve months since I attended a Foraging from the Carcass course with Will. Barely a day passes without thinking about it.

I took the course as a kind of ‘passage of rites’ as a meat eater, previously happy to let someone else kill and butcher unseen, for my benefit.

Having now taken the heart out of a fallow deer, effectively turning an animal into a carcass, I was struck by the bond that grew within me.

I never had that strong sense of understanding, respect and responsibility beforehand. The entire animal was group processed during the course to good use, ie food, tools, cordage and for our group, the hide for drumskins.

I now have a better understanding of my place on this earth.

At the end of the weekend it seemed fitting that I took the skull. I knew Will understood why without saying a word. Once the worms have finished their work, that skull and I will have more adventures.

This weekend course was incredible. Will’s interaction with everyone is so pure and genuine. His passion for what he does is intoxicating. and so real. His knowledge is mind blowing.

The process of making the bows and arrows was incredible. what an achievement in 2 days. Thank you so much for your time, skills and this experience. So glad I came on this course and now I have a magical Long bow to be proud of.

Yes, flintknapping can sound intimidating at first. But Will possesses a great sense of guiding you step by step with a clear sense of what to expect and what is achievable. His understanding of the stone and how to approach it is simply unparalleled. If you add to the mix a great sense of humor and a keen sense of sharing the time spent in his company is unvaluable.

Of course, the same also applies to bow manking.

After purchasing and attending the Flint Knapping experience for a friends birthday, I can honestly say it was superb. Will is so knowledgeable, not just about Flint Knapping but also the natural world, natural history and philosophy. I wasn’t too good at Knapping but I still took a lot away from this experience. I highly recommend that you try it, you won’t regret it.

With Will’s expert guidance prehistoric tool and weapon making becomes a real, living experience. The Flint knapping day was a Christmas gift and a truly memorable one . It was amazing to return home and back to the 21st century with my little haul of hand crafted Flint tools ! Thank you Will !
